  • Elm Week of 3-30-20

Here is an important update! Each student has been invited to Google Classroom. They will have several invites to different classes. They should expect to be invited to a grade level math and language class, grade level history and science class and their regular Elm class page will be there already. They are familiar with this format as they have used in the past with writing assignments and with Mr. Kevin. If they have any trouble logging in and joining classes, please reach out to me at csherrod@cacmp.org and I will walk them through it. As we move to a potentially more long term distance learning situation, these Google Classrooms will help us provide meaningful lessons and extension work for our students. During our Zoom meeting on Friday I did personally asked all students to do this step.

I know that there will be a lesson for fifth grade science posted during the week so be on the lookout for that. This is to introduce students to the format and give them an idea of what to expect from each "classroom" going forward.

Please notice the "square of squares" or "waffle" in the top right. This is to go between their email, Google Classroom page, docs, slides, and sheets. They will have everything they need here.

    STEAM Projects:
We know our students have worked hard on their STEAM project this past month and we would like to honor their effort and creativity. We ask that students email their completed projects to me at csherrod@cacmp.org before Friday, April 3. Please see below for specific details:

    • If your project presentation was completed on Google Slides, please share the slideshow with us.
    • If you used Power Point, please email the presentation to us.
    • If you created a poster, please take pictures and email those to us.

We understand it is not how we had initially planned to share our students' amazing work, but we would like to make the most of it. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Zoom: We were so blessed to see so many of our Elmers on our Zoom meeting on Friday. I was able to see their faces as well as troubleshoot some login issues! I hope that seeing their teacher and peers helped to ease some worry. I think it was unanimous, from students and parents, that we miss school!

This week: I have attached the weekly planner to serve as a guide for learning this week. As I stated last week please use what you can and be sure that it fits your family, time, and resources. i-Ready is expected and also there for you as a back-up, in the event that you need it. I am very pleased at what I see and am proud of what each parent and student has been able to accomplish. I have said it several times, please reach out to me if you need anything!

Math: You can continue using the math review sheets I attached to my Parent Square these past two weeks. I attached them again for quick reference. I also attached two long term math projects again: A Tiny House, and A Taco Truck Activity. These will take more than a week, but we thought many students would find it a fun way to build and incorporate math. Of course extra i-Ready is always allowed. Some students have indicated that they are running out of resources with math, please reach out to me and I will happily send you more.

Geometry: I attached three new geometry pages, should you need them.

Story Works: Please access the magazine online. Log on to: https://storyworks.scholastic.com/
Click on "log in", top right corner, click "I am a student", enter class code "Elmers".
This will take you to our newest magazine. The story we are working on is "There Were Giants". Read the story, below is a PDF that can be printed out and filled in just as we usually do in class. Use this as your language, reading, free choice, etc. Please just print out 5 days worth of activities, NOT the whole thing!

Writing/Language: Log on to your .net account and find the lesson for this week. There is a new lesson there. If your essay is not finished or turned in, please finish that as well.

Thank you all for hanging in there with us. We hope we have provided you work options that fit your schedule. Did I mention that I am here if you need me? :)

Thank you, Mrs. Sherrod & Mrs. Marina

  • Elm Week of 3-23-20

Happy Monday. Well, as we enter week two I really want you all to know that last week was a training week for all of us. I got a chance to speak personally with many of you and you are doing a fabulous job homeschooling your child/children through all of this. I am walking a fine line of trying to give you choices, options, and suggestions while also providing you with meaningful work that fosters growth from each student. Do not let my suggestions overwhelm you. Take what you want and ignore what does not work for your family, time, and resources. As long as each student is working, they are learning. I was very encouraged by the number of students who were using i-Ready as a back-up, or an extra, going above and beyond their 45 minutes. This is a great resource and a fine choice to use when things need to be easy for you. These lessons are specifically leveled for each student.

Attached is a new planner for this week. My goal is to use the same one each week, but the more time that passes the more decisions are made and the more resources I am able to use.

Math: You can continue using the math review sheets I attached to my Parent Square last week. I attached them again should you need them. I also attached two long term math projects: A Tiny House, and A Taco Truck Activity. These will take more than a week, but we thought many students would find it a fun way to build and incorporate math. Of course extra i-Ready is always allowed.

Geometry: Any perimeter, area, or volume review would be great! I attached two worksheets to make it easier for you if you wish.

Story Works: Please access the magazine online. Log on to: https://storyworks.scholastic.com/
Click on "log in", top right corner, click "I am a student", Enter class code "Elmers".
This will take you to our newest magazine. The story we are working on is "The Snake That's Eating Florida". Read the story, below is a PDF that can be printed out and filled in just as we usually do in class. Use this as your language, reading, free choice, etc. Please just print out 5 days worth of activities, NOT the whole thing!

Writing: Log on to your .net account and find the lesson for this week. If your essay is not finished or turned in, please finish that as well.

Follow-Ups: We are hoping to get online lessons together for Wednesday and Thursday. We will be using our .net accounts through Google "Hangouts" and "Meet".

Please have your students check their .net email as well. Some students will be using this to "talk" with others. Thank you all so much! If you ever have any questions, please reach out to us! We check our emails all day :)
